Facebook Makes Timeline Feature Mandatory: What Does This Mean For Your Privacy Settings

Facebook may be in hot water again over the privacy of their users. The Electronic Privacy Information Center recently asked the FTC to investigate possible privacy violations in the new Facebook Timeline feature. The last time the EPIC requested the Timeline feature be investigated, it resulted in a two-year legal battle that ended late last year with a landmark settlement between the social networking Giant and the FTC. This most recent complaint came after it was discovered that the Timeline violates the November settlement. The EPIC claims that Facebook is going against what was decided on in the settlement.  With them pressing everyone to adopt the Timeline feature they have once again taken control over the user’s personal information. This is information that was supposed to be archived and inaccessible, is now available without the consent of the user.

The Timeline feature was first introduced to users on December 6th, 2011 and it completely changed the way a Facebook user’s information is displayed. It displays your life in pictures and events chronicling each time in your life, from the time you signed up to the present. The EPIC feels Facebook is not obeying the settlement that forbids Facebook from changing the security settings without the approval of the consumers. Facebook is also prohibited from sharing more information from an individual’s profile then their privacy settings allow. Not only that but every two years for the next 20 years, Facebook’s privacy settings will be subjected to an audit by an unbiased third party.  The first audit of this settlement comes in May. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has admitted that the company has made many mistakes in regards to the planning and execution of their privacy model, but he also was quick to reassure consumers of the company’s dedication to transparency.
