Pretty soon you will not only be able to see what is happening in everyone’s lives you will get sponsored ads popping up in your News Feed. “Starting early next year, we will gradually begin showing Sponsored Stories in News Feed,” a spokesperson for Facebook said. “Our goal is to do this thoughtfully and slowly. We hope to show people no more than one Sponsored Story in their News Feeds per day and the story will be clearly labeled.” It is unfortunate and should be noted that users will not have the option to block the sponsored stories from appearing in their news feed or having their content read by Facebook so that ads can be targeted to them. These ads will most likely cause a bit of conflict and frustration  due to the fact that they will look very much like News Feed posts, and many users may not realize they are looking at an ad at first glance. This would be a good reason for the company to integrate the ads slowly showing just one per day.

The way this works is advertisers will pay to have user stories and interactions turned into featured ads. Facebook will display the ads in gray type at the bottom right corner of news feed stories. Facebook has before attempted trying to mix advertising with the site’s social content. The company first began experimenting with this back in 2006, but stopped in 2008. Since then ads do appear in the site’s sidebar, although we are not used to seeing them directly in our news feed. The ads will stay off the mobile devices for the time being, however it has been reported by technology blog TechCrunch, that Facebook is considering the idea. “We want to be really thoughtful about this, so we’ll have a lot of rate limits in place. We hope to show people no more than one Sponsored Story in their News Feeds per day and we’ll clearly label the story. They’ll also be of the same size and treatment as other stories in your News Feed.” We will just have to wait and see how this turns out once this is launched January 2012.
